Yen for Yellow

August 10, 2011 by Jane F 2 Comments

Textile designer Gretchen Bellinger's yellow bedroom with red accent - ElleDecor via AtticmagLet’s consider the mellow yellow bedroom color that’s often viewed as stimulating.

Anyone who subscribes to color-use theories also may have read that yellow bedrooms aren’t a good idea because, while it’s happy and cheerful, this hue stimulates mental activity and muscle energy. While I feel that a certain energy is a definite plus in that particular room, I find it difficult to attribute such things strictly to paint or wallpaper colors. But then, I have a yellow bedroom which I consider to be very peaceful.

My current yen for yellow bedrooms followed my long-running penchant for gray. But the gray is gone and I keep finding yellow sleeperies that look quite dreamy to me.

Chief among these has been textile designer Gretchen Bellinger’s lemony bedroom [top] – one that might help gauge feelings about the color in general. The walls, bed and area rugs are more or less the same, while a deeper shade is used for the decorative pillows.

yellow and white print bedroom with fabric-lined walls by Mariette Himes-Gomez, Architectural Digest via AtticmagIn this serene Park Avenue bedroom, walls are upholstered with small-scale white-on-yellow print fabric and bordered with gimp. White woodwork and sheer curtains are picked out by the duvet and bed pillows. Otherwise, designer Mariette Himes Gomez kept things as monochromatic as fine Dijon mustard with a  window shade to match.

Great post. I am always drawn to calming blues and greens in bedrooms but I do love bright splashes of color. I don’t think it would keep me up at night 🙂
