Wooden kitchen accessories make cooking more enjoyable
The sumptuous colors of the modern shaped knife block along with the dramatic handles make this Fusionwood set a work of art when it comes to wooden kitchen accessories. Designed by Corey Milligan of New West Knifeworks, select hardwood veneers are impregnated with dyes and phenolic resins. They are finished with a high-carbon stainless tool steel blade from America’s oldest cutlery manufacturer, Lamson and Goodnow Company. These kitchen tools are built to last a lifetime.
Exotic zebrawood is used to create cutting boards at Carolina Wood Designs. Owner Michael Osucha says end grain construction allows knives to stay sharpened longer. It even allows self healing. As with all wooden kitchen accessories, sealing occasionally with oil protect the pieces and cleaning is easy with a little mild detergent and water.
As a young man, Jonathan Simons was working as an apprentice furniture maker when he forgot to put a spoon in his lunch sack, so he whittled one from a single piece of wood. Years later, when faced with unemployment and weather too cold for glue to dry properly, Jonathan remembered the spoon and started experimenting in his workshop and kitchen. He designed warm cherry wood utensils from single pieces of wood and Jonathan’s Wild Cherry Spoons was born. The Lazy Spool collection has increased to include spatulas, tongs, spreaders and more. Each item includes a cut-out for resting on the edge of pots. While function is certainly the most important consideration before purchasing, it’s ultimately the feeling each item brings forth that leads to enjoyment.

Ooooh, I’m not sure which I like best! On the one hand, give me color, on the other, I love exotic wood grains, but at the same time, the warmth of the hand carved wooden spoons….
Gorgeous pics! The colors in that first pic are stunning! And the checkerboard zebrawood is so dramatic. Love the simplicity of the hand carved spoons, too. I love what artisans can do with wood, and those pieces are often the perfect showpieces for a kitchen. One of my favorites is Don Strenz woodworking, a somewhat local artisan who makes amazing cutting boards as well as other items. Thanks for sharing these awesome wood pieces.
Aren’t the Jonathan Simons cherry utensils the best. I’ve been a long time users of his spoons and spatulas and they are always the first pieces I reach for when I need a spoon to stir the pot.
Thanks so much for your kind words – we love hearing from our long time customers.
Such a cool knife set!!
My son (now 17) made me a wooden spoon a couple of years ago…So I definitely agree with the statement, “…it’s ultimately the feeling each item brings forth that leads to enjoyment.” 😀
Thanks for dropping by. The knife set is available in a knife block without the coloring, but it’s so dramatic I had to write about it!
RHome410, that is so sweet.
SilverMagpies, DH will fuss but I may have to get a set. They are gorgeous and look so silky smooth. Do you clean yours sometimes with a Scotchbrite pad as he suggests on his website? I’ve only owned cheap wooden utensils and they just don’t clean well. How often do you oil yours?
