Color Trends at Home

June 14, 2009 by Jane F Leave a Comment

Pantone is the color matching authority and color trends forecaster for the design world.

Who understands color trends? At best that’s a difficult task because color preferences are based on collective cultural emotions and gathering that type of information is highly technical. That’s why the fashion and home design worlds rely on Pantone as the color authority. Pantone breaks color down so it can be matched when necessary, produces yearly color forecasts, and has created some interesting videos that explain various aspects of color and how it ties into our lives.

Allison found this Pantone video that groups and explains color trends. And because they work 18 months ahead, this video has some ideas and hues that we may already be seeing in home design. It provides a rich and valuable background for understanding how colors become popular and why we might have certain chroma cravings now and in the coming months. Breaking things down into eight different color palettes, it explains why we are inspired by the colors of food, by our concern with natural resources, and even how we are updating tradition through color. Although we live with them every day, none of these ideas are obvious and this is a great way to learn a good deal about our own style at home.

(Please be patient for a few moments it might take for the video to load after you click on the white arrow)
