House of Orange

orange home decor on a front door- thefrenchtangerine via atticmagI keep reading that orange home decor isn’t a favorite. That’s so untrue!

I keep seeing orange used on everything from contemporary shower faucets to kitchen cabinets, likely due to the long, strong revival of mid-20th century furniture and accessories. Orange was a much-favored hue in the 1960s when Scandinavian and German designers dominated contemporary aesthetics. While orange home decor may be a slight hangover now, it reads as unexpected and refreshing – consider the impact of a traditional front door [top] which looks like it might be from a house in the Carribbean. Or Holland. Or Copenhagen.

orange home decor on a kitchen island in mid-century modern style kitchen – bhg via atticmagOrange on the base of the island creates a lively focal point in this mid-20th century revival kitchen. Cream-and brown – a widely used color scheme in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

orange home decor accent wall with white grid in home office – lifehacker via atticmagAn orange accent wall dominates this home work space, even with the vinyl-tape grid design used on the wall to add an architectural look and help the artwork look anchored. While that color is all you see, it creates a happy aura that would make it comforting to work here on a stormy winter’s day.

white kitchen with orange home decor in an Oriental print runner – thisoldhouse via atticmagRugs are often overlooked as a way to add color. But traditionally, orange is one of the basic Oriental rug colors. In this renovated white kitchen, the field (or background) color of the runner calls attention to the big salvage utility sink calls. And from this angle, there is even a suggestion of how the floor would look if it were patterned cement tile rather than wood.

orange home decor in a tangerine upholstered headboard in a bedroom – beautifulwalldecals via atticmagOrange and blue are ancient partners – just consider their classic pairing in suzani patterns. Here, the orange-upholstered headboard is plain and really pops against the damask-print wall. I don’t think the room would look as friendly and mellow as this one if, say, the headboard were magenta, yellow or green.

bedroom with burnt orange home decor accent wall – housetohome via atticmagBurnt orange looks tamer on an accent wall than tangerine or poppy. And in combination with the handsome white Marks & Spencer bed, it appears classic and classy rather than seasonal or trendy.
