Black-and-White Classic Kitchen

black and white classic kitchen patterned after the Something's Gotta Give movie kitchen - new old house mag via atticmagIn a black-and-white classic kitchen the glossy java floor helps show off all the details.

A black-and-white classic kitchen in New England was patterned after the “Something’s Gotta Give” movie kitchen — the movie set that inspired a white kitchen movement that began in 2003 and continues. This kitchen surpasses the film set kitchen. Larger and even more elaborate than its inspiration it takes the idea of traditional white cabinets topped by black counters and works it — hard.

The basics here include Victorian-style white cabinets but these base cabinets have spool — rather than bracket — feet. There are glass doors on the upper cabinets with bracket supports below and substantial crown moldings on top. White painted bead board is used in the cabinet backs. Dark cabinet hardware dots the cabinets with twist-latches or knobs on the doors and bin pulls on the drawers. Then there’s the iconic white subway tile backsplash — another hallmark of this “one true kitchen” style. Two major cabinet features also are included here. One is the chest-on-chest, to the left of the range, where the bottom cabinet in a double tier sits directly on the counter, over a bank of drawers. That allows for additional upper cabinet depth and storage. A second popular form is the Welsh cupboard or dresser — just to the left of the back door. That type of cabinet is designed for dish and cutlery storage with a clear stretch of counter than can be used for serving. The spirit of the movie kitchen also is represented by the schoolhouse pendant lights over the island and by the sea foam green walls. Honed black granite counters provide high contrast in the kitchen and are the black element of the black-and-white classic kitchen.

Like many large kitchens, there is enough space for a huge island which includes a sizable prep sink across from the range. The main white farm sink is on the window wall. Another special addition is the plate rack display over the range hood. The glossy sleek java-colored floor sets off all the movie-grade whiteness and adds to the dazzling overall effect.
