Checkerboard tile, worked two ways, creates black and white visual “wow”.
A top European designer, the late Alberto Pinto, pushed the black and white checkerboard tile theme to the max in his own Parisian penthouse kitchen. Large-scale black and white tile, worked in a staggered pattern is used on the entire sink wall (right) all along the range wall (left) and in the butler’s pantry as well. Black countertops keep things simple. On the floor of the somewhat narrow kitchen, the same tile is set diagonally — like the checks on a clown costume — to create visual buzz and help to widen the room visually. Note the retro diner chairs, industrial style stainless steel pendant lamps, and high loss refrigerator and freezerdoors (right) that deftly support the concept. An adjacent butler’s pantry, with the same scheme, has a Miele dishwasher.
