More Modern Life Show House

Part two of our Modern Life Concept house tour in a NYC condo continues.

Ten young “Designers to Watch,” have decorated rooms in Elle Decor magazine’s first Modern Life Concept House. Apartments are on the tenth floor of a new condominium in Manhattan’s trendy Chelsea neighborhood. The elegantly minimalistic flats have wide-plank floors, window walls, and economies of space that are well served by leading edge ideas. Up-and-coming designers have furnished their rooms with products from name-brand home design partners.

Both spaces have a similar modern sensibility focused around bold colors, dark rooms, natural woods, embellishment,  texture, and stylish accessories. Proceeds from the Modern Life show house benefit Housing Works, a charity that deals with homelessness and AIDS.

Living Room – Carrier & Company & Room & Board
The maxim that a color scheme should be pulled from the rug holds true for this bright and shiny living room based on Room & Board‘s striped wool Capri carpet. There are the requisite neutrals highlighted by citrus accents in the hand-knotted weave. Carrier & Company (husband-and-wife team Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller) used the rug as the bridge between two neutral upholstered sofas from the Hess collection — one with its back to the window [top] and another across the room on the entry wall. At the window, the daybed serves as banquette, setting up a secondary dining area around a black-marble Saarinen table and Eames molded-plastic chairs.

The mustard- leather chair with matching ottoman offers squishy seating and in back, there is a quartet of étagères as a backdrop for storage and display.

In front of the sofa, a pair of muscular accent tables are sized well and don’t block the compact space.

Kitchen-Dining Room – Katie Lydon & Bosch

Katie Lydon propped a mirror behind the dual-fuel range to glitz up the somewhat somber kitchen with charcoal-gray counters and matching backsplash.
Atop a console table on the window wall, Lydon chose a pair of chunky, sculptural bronze-tone candlesticks.

A white-painted metal floor lamp with exuberant red shade is set against gauzy white curtains with a red paisley motif. Red offers a great punch of girl-color in the corner and could have enlivened kitchen chairs.

Master Suite – Marie Turner & Lema

A palette ranging from milk to java makes for a lush master bedroom by Marie Turner, who partners with her sister and mother at melledesign.  The high window dictates the placement of the bed on the west wall.

While furniture elsewhere in the apartment faces into the room, placing the desk in front of the window takes logical advantage of the city view.

A detail like the overcast stitching on the Lema Softland leather headboard bed is elegantly understated.

The wool-mosaic carpet combines modern colors with an Aesthetic style fan motif, all joined together with lovely stitch work that references the bed.

Glamorous gilt treatment on the ceiling and walls of an open walk-in closet turn it into a mini room. The whimsical ceiling light works well with Lema’s closet fittings.

Leather boxes function as drawers for the handsome Lema unit. Don’t you see boots going into that empty corner? I can.

Home Office – Oliver M. Furth & USM Modular Furniture

With floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides of a room, moody black walls don’t feel confining.

Sleek and hard-edge, this study by Oliver M. Furth, using a usm table and shelving, becomes a  cocoon with almost anything one might need within reach. At night, when the color of the sky matches the walls of the room, light from glass-mobile chandelier keeps the apartment in sync with the universe.

The leaf pattern on the chair invites you to sit right down in the zone.
