Unfitted kitchens swap built-in cabinetry for informal cottage charm.
It is no secret I love unfitted English kitchens. Using actual furniture or furniture style pieces in the room makes it so less kitchen-like, a welcomed idea in open-concept floor plans. This example is from Smallbone of Devizes and typical of high-end unfitted English kitchens. The freestanding sink with marble top and back splash updates Victorian kitchen style. There is oversized pot storage below and a handy plate rack over the sink for drying. Pot racks can be integral with some sinks. This one is wall mounted on sturdy steel brackets and holds the equivalent of a cupboard full of dishes.
What is uncommon about this example is the lack of cabinetry color seen in most English kitchens. But the natural wood straddles an contemporary cottage approach and makes it word with the sleek modern refrigeration, also outlined in wood for warmth.
While a sink like this is spacious — and it provides two storage drawers — there isn’t a great deal of counter space on each side. But that’s a function of having it sit between two windows.
