A seductive cousin to a farm sink, the wall mount kitchen sink works in a laundry, utility or mudroom, too.
Meet a wall mount kitchen sink that’s so attractive and versatile it can work in almost any room. Kohler’s Gilford sink is a unique one-piece farm style sink with a plus — the integral backsplash that attaches it to the wall. Technically this is a vitreous china utility or laundry sink in the old-fashioned WWII era style and it requires a wall-mounted faucet. Yet it has all the attributes of a farm sink.
The Gilford comes in two sizes. I think the 30-inch wide sink, that’s 9-1/2-inches deep, suits a kitchen best. (The 24-inch wide option can be used in a bathroom, utility or mudroom as well.) The combination of good looks, self-contained shape, and no counter top involvement in its installation are strong points. Counters simply sit under the exterior rim. This cheerful yellow color, called Sunlight, is perfect for a cottage kitchen. There also was an artist’s series pattern called “Journey,” which has been discontinued.
Marketed with different faucets from retro bridge to pot filler — and sometimes called a scrub-up, plaster- or laundry sink — Kohler’s Gilford comes in neutral colors including biscuit, almond, white and black. In this kitchen with pale gray cabinets and white subway tile the bottom section is buried in the cabinet leaving a strip of white statuario marble in front. This alternate and elegant way to install the sink makes it look less cottage/country. Similar style wall mount kitchen sinks can sometimes be found in good condition at salvage yards.
