The simplicity of hand finished cherry cabinets with black granite has a vintage New England feeling.
In a newly built Connecticut house, the owner wanted a traditional New England look. For the kitchen that meant the hand-rubbed patina of vintage cabinets she had in the kitchen of her former home. It took some doing to find woodworkers who could provide the look she wanted but in the end they provided the warm custom cherry cabinets and finished them with Waterlox. The conservative style of this kitchen continues with a Walker Zanger Alhambra Paja off-white ceramic tile back splash. That’s just slightly less rustic than the Walker Zanger Andalusia Moorish Gold limestone floor tile.
While the kitchen is used often for entertaining the appliances are modest. The range top is by Viking and the ovens, microwave and warming drawer by Thermidor. The main sink is Elkay stainless steel with a Delta faucet and dispenser. In typical restrained New England style, there’s little flashy here.
The large island has interesting built ins such as the organic waste “slot,” a pull-out garbage bin, and integral knife rack. The prep sink and faucet are by Kohler and the cherry top matches the cabinets.
