Green slate counters are a bold step in a country style kitchen. Slate is a porous stone and prone to water staining. Many kitchen designers would advise against using it extensively in food preparation areas. But this kitchen with green slate counters breaks the rules. The green slate matches the color of upper cabinets and contrasts with the reddish tone of the base cabinets.  White streaking in the stone helps make the connection with white-painted planked walls and the ceiling. And while counters as dark as these might absorb the light in a different room, the abundance of natural light keeps things in balance. With th ekitchen set on one side of an open-lan room, the long island has a step up to shield the sink from view. Overhead there is ultra-modern monorail lighting that solves a practical problem given the vaulted ceiling and adds  a certain edginess to the entire space.
