English-style cabinets mix with a French taste for a black farm sink.
Black is the star of this white & black kitchen due to the imposing slant-front, double-bowl black farm sink in the island. Soapstone lends itself beautifully to custom sinks in this style as well as to matching counters. Many black and white kitchens have black counters but that’s it. Here, the black counters tie the design together from the sink, to the gas range and to the matching glazed-tile behind it. A black backsplash or range guard is always attractive but not often seen. Here, with white traditional style cabinets, it works.
Doors on the white cabinets, by Quebec designer André Julien are inset. The cabines are Victorian style with glass front doors on the upper cabinets as well as the soffit cabinets. Often, soffit door panels are solid. Here, there are dishes to display — it’s not clear whether the cabinets are lighted from within but that’s always a nice feature. The large double-decker hood over the range is nicely integrated into that wall. Antiques are also worked in for variation, including the gas-lamp pendant and an unfitted dark wood piece that can be partially seen on the right.
