Trough prep sinks are practical and space-saving
One little-noticed addition to the “smart kitchen” is a novel range of trough prep sinks which are narrow and linear. Most are no more 8-inches wide and they are shaped like troughs — hence the name. Trough sinks come in a variety of lengths ranging from 5-feet to just under 24-inches, standard counter depth. Troughs can be installed horizontally near the back of a counter or vertically to one side. After seeing the extensive range made by Kohler in their Undertone line, I’m beginning to feel this shape is more practical and space-efficient than than round, square or even rectangular prep sinks used most kitchens.
Trough sinks are designed to be under-mounted and their length basically determines whether they are installed horizontally or vertically in the counter. Among the most intriguing is Kohler’s high-tech slanted Crevasse, designed to fit a 36” sink base. This is an automated sink with automatic rinse at the push of a button plus a garbage disposal! The water and disposer action is integral — no faucet required. It is shown installed at the back of the counter — directly behind the prep space. I am so intrigued by this sink and surprised not to have seen it in more high-end kitchens.

A trough sink can be installed next to a main sink (with the Verve drop-in, above) as a secondary (or tertiary) bowl — with or without a disposal.
