Farm Sink Installation Tutorial

farm sink installation - an uncut sink base with the full panel - AtticmagThree-step farm sink installation tutorial for a 36-inch Shaw’s fireclay kitchen sink.

1. The Uncut Sink Base – Here are photos of a farm sink installation for a Shaw’s 36-inch fireclay sink in Barb J ‘s Adelphi white birch farm-sink cabinet base (Legacy style). The sink base was ordered with a solid apron so it could be custom-cut for the fireclay farm sink which has slightly irregular sides. The sink base needed to be cut to the owner’s specifications. Many cabinets provide farm sink bases which may or may not require this process. Shaw’s sinks are handmade and the sides are not perfectly straight. Custom cutting was required for a snug fit. Vitreous porcelain farm sinks, and other brands of fireclay and cast iron farm sinks may have no variation in size and don’t require custom carpentry. Also, it’s important to know whether the bottom front of the sink is radius (curved) or square (0 radius).  The plan was to mount the sink under Baltic brown granite with a 1/4-inch positive reveal, leaving just a fraction of the inside rim visible.

The Rough-Cut Sink Base – The front of the cinnamon-stained base cabinet was roughly cut to fit the Shaw’s 36-inch fireclay sink, which varies slightly all the way up the sides. Note that the bottom corners of the base are square while the bottom corners of the sink are rounded, leaving a little gap to be filled. The sink is nearly flush with the base cabinet so the edge of the granite lines up with the rim.

Finished Sink Base – To accommodate the curved bottom edges of the sink, a wood collar scribed to hug the curves was cut and set into the rough-cut base. The granite has a pencil edge to show off the 1/4-positive reveal. The oil-rubbed-bronze Concinnity Strathmore faucet and sprayer are deck-mounted in the 3-cm stone. Cabinet pulls, from Rejuvenation Hardware, match the faucet.
