A Toronto smart home has a surprise feature in the living room — a flat screen TV in modern disguise.
A Toronto smart home, “wired for the future,” is fully automated. So it seems ironic to find a TV cached behind wood panels in the living room. The point about this house is automation of the basic systems like lighting, audio, security, heating, air conditioning and ventilation. All of these are controlled from touch panels via WiFi. Both the flat screen and the fireplace below it are automated as well. Would the flat screen even work when the panels are closed?
With that level of commitment to tech — along with modernist architecture and furniture — it may not matter that the tv is in hiding. The paneling makes a beautiful living room statement wall that also happens to have a secondary purpose.
The owners of the home, who love wood, chose highly figured book-matched walnut veneer for its aesthetic value. The cabinet appears to have six doors — a pair on each with the larger sliders operating in front. Provided by Toronto’s Muti Kitchens and Bath, the TV cabinet dominates, making the low, linear fireplace — set in black slate, with Algonquin stone above — barely noticeable.
The wood style also deftly evokes mid-century 20th century Scandinavian cabinets which were often made in walnut and presents an architectural style that works well with contemporary furnishings from ELTE, a leading Toronto retailer.
