A California Mission style bath relies on textures and materials from historic local architecture.
Distressed wood with nailheads and ring-pulls is reminiscent of the rough darkness of wood found in California Misson architecture. This master bath takes its inspiration from that era in California design with white stucco walls straight from the hacienda. Wrought iron is also part of the rustic California heritage look so it’s no surprise to see wrought iron sconces and towel bars along with dark tone bath fixtures. Designer Robin Cannell Baker relied on distressed stone tiles together with cobalt glazed ceramic tile for an elaborate tub deck inset with high relief animal head tiles! Including the herringbone pattern of the stone paver floor the bath is a mini fiesta of tile sizes and shapes. Restricting the palette to earth tones plus indigo shows clear-headed refinement with striking results. Topping the double bathroom vanity with stone that has an unfinished edge is another nice refinement. A bath with this specific style is not suitable for every home. But Spanish Mission and Mediterranean homes abound in California. Sometimes there is original tile and finding a compatible solution for renovating rooms like bathrooms and kitchen can become a challenge. We love the rug, too.
