Gray Marble Bathroom

A renovation with simple details yields fabulous results in a gray marble bathroom.

When a friend of ours redid her narrow, turn-of-the-century NYC apartment bathroom, she opted for simplicity with a kiss of glitz. She chose a gray marble bathroom using honed marble tile. The tile was sourced from Country Floors which used four sizes from the same collection  —  subways for the wainscot, mosaic for floor, and tiny ½-inch tesserae for floor and wainscot borders to catch the light in a luxurious way. The smallest scale tile also adds lovely detail and allow for the vagaries of a 19th century building.

.Using one-inch mosaic “dots” on the floor keeps it from being slipper. Pale gray grout blends well with the variations in the mosaic colors. Mosaic floors were fairly standing in the first half of the 20th century in New York City apartments. So while the tile is new, the style preserves the historic character to some degree. A detail of the floor shows how the 1/2-inch mosaic was installed as a beautiful border. The small size also acts as a buffer between the horizontal subway tiles on the wainscot and the mosaic squares on the main area of the floor.

Plain white fireclay fixtures work well with the traditional tile look. The white rococo console sink and skirted tub from Sunrise Specialty helped increase visual space in a rather small bath. But they don’t compete with the marble at all — they enhance it. The tile designers at Country Floors, where the tile was sourced, tucked double row of the mini-mosaic under the beefy wainscot cap as a way to repeat the detailing on the floor. Because the renovated bathroom style is well matched to the apartment and sensitive to historic style as well, it’s a look that will never be dated.
