Tall Headboards

February 20, 2015 by Jane F 1 Comment

tall headboards - assemblage of beige cushion shapes from a hotel style headboard - decorativebedrooms.com via atticmagTall headboards are like diamonds. The larger they are the more attention they get.

That may be one reason why we are seeing a trend towards tall headboards — some so high they cover the entire wall above a bed and nearly reach the ceiling. From a practical standpoint, a tall headboard is also a decorative element since the size eliminates the need for art. Tall headboards add a different surface to the room and, at the same time, make a statement. Often called ‘hotel’ headboards, their form follows function with attention to bed — and why not?

Whimsical and stylish, this headboard-sculpture-wall art [top] really illustrates the point. Like an assemblage of small cushions, padded pieces help keep it comfortable and yet visually it is a very hard worker. For me, this is very much a hotel look but public design at home is more popular than ever.
tall headboards - button tufted white king size headboard - Katie by Design via AtticmagWhoa! This tufted headboard on a king size bead is Texas size. And it has the wonderful sense of a pastel confection created by Houston interior designer Katie Scott. Comfortable, impressive and likely custom, the headboard is almost as tall as the door casing, well over six feet high.

tall headboards - whitewashed Asian pierced wood screen used as a headboard - a sense of design via atticmagAsian woodwork often has intricate designs. With its center rosette and concentric circles this whitewashed pierced wood screen has great impact over the bed, even though it doesn’t fit the width exactly, if you notice. As such, it’s likely a better piece of wall art than a headboard per se although that’s slicing it fairly fine as definitions go for these.

tall headboards - contemporary channel tufted gray headboard - houzz via AtticmagCrisp, comfortable and easy to DIY, this horizontal channel-tufted headboard is — in the immortal words of one pinner who admired it — yours with just  “four rolls of batting, a sheet of 1/4 inch plywood, fabric screws and a stable gun.” And depending on the fabric, the style could swing from boho to this tailored mid-century look.

tall headboards - vintage shutters repurposed as a headboard - decormanka via atticmagFill the tank and get ready to cruise the salvage yards! Provided a set of shutters as charming as these could be found to repurpose, a headboard that oozes this much character is attainable. These shutters are French and the pediments give them great panache. Of course, anyone who’s good with a jigsaw opens up a world of crafty possibilities.

tall headboards - rustic timber framed upholstered headboard - usualhouse.com via atticmagRustic headboards are among my favorites. And this one, with it’s reclaimed timber frame, really showcases the bed. The natural simplicity appeals to me and while tall, the neutral fabric area doesn’t feel overwhelming.  A similar, more elaborate headboard in my High Country Bedrooms post is more visual demanding whereas this one has a restful, low maintenance country life aura.
