Galbraith and Paul Rugs

Contemporary handmade rugs from Galbraith and Paul create a sea of bright color.

I have been compiling a special list of rug designers to share with you, including Galbraith and Paul. These are creative folks who, unlike moi, have the artistic ability to bring their visions to life. Textile artists Liz Galbraith and Ephraim Paul started their business journey as a studio with a focus on lamps with hand made paper shades. Next came fabric design and to the delight of passionate rug people, made to order hand-tufted rugs in a choice of colors, fibers and textures.

Tufted rugs may be hand made but instead of being hand knotted individually on a grid of string, the wool loops are pushed through a backing following the outline of the rug design with a special tool called a tufting gun. Then a second backing, known as a scrim, is secured with latex glue to keep the tufts of wool in place. The process is far faster than hand knotting and, accordingly the rugs are more affordable. One special aspect of rugs from Galbraith and Paul are the coordinating fabrics that make easy work of combining upholstered furniture with carpets like the Warm Zinnia rug [top] or the fun New Zealand wool looped rug referred to as “orange donuts.” Contemporary rug designs like these work well as a way to add color to a room on the floor, while keeping major pieces of furniture neutral.
