Upper-floor spaces such as attic rooms expand the livability of a home.
Late last year we sacrificed our attic to a major insulation project that transformed it into an air-sealed, taped down no-man’s land with thick, foil-covered foam-board lining the floor. When the contractor finished it looked like part of the International Space Station, complete with a door hatch. We were never able to use the attic much due to heat extremes, and it’s even less usable now. I’m not complaining since the insulation changed our house from cold and drafty to warm and cozy — but it makes me envious of anyone with attic rooms that can be used. While our house has an adequate laundry room and two home offices, I long for one of those idyllic attic studio spaces with great light, one that could be dedicated to sewing and crafts, my photography projects plus have space for a gift-wrapping station.
