An expensive renovation that nods to 1950s mid century modern California architecture.
Bubble chandeliers were a keynote of mid century modern design — especially in the 1960s. There have been many variations on the theme for the past 60 years and the 20th century modern aesthetic is still going strong. I count ten mirror-polish pendant spheres dominating the island in this California kitchen. Those set the look in a definitive way. The architecture of the house also speaks to mid-century modern construction with glass walls on two sides plus clerestory windows that allow the outdoors in right below the ceiling. I adore natural light from clerestory windows and there’s nothing as lovely for working in a kitchen. This one has been lovingly restored. Cream-color Poggenpohl painted cabinets are used on the perimeter and a large island. There’s a full suite of Viking appliances – including range and vent hood, wall oven and microwave, dishwasher and compactor. The stainless takes on a kind of Swiss neutrality: classic, timeless and obviously expensive. Were it not for the granite counter tops and the appliances it would be difficult to determine when this kitchen was built. But one this is sure: the classic style will stay fresh for many years.
