The flip-panel Torggler kinetic door takes opening and closing beyond the slider.
Many aspects of our homes are changing due to technology – lighting, heating and alarm systems, appliances and insulation. Now, an Austrian artist named Klemens Torggler is rethinking a basic feature that hasn’t changed for centuries: the door. Photographs and videos, posted on YouTube, show the concept better than any written description.
The Torggler kinetic door is essentially two squares joined together by bars that allow both pieces to pivot across and away from the door opening rather than swinging. The system of rods braced behind the squares eliminates the need for the door to move on tracks or on traditional hinges.
Like sliding interior barn doors we’ve been writing about for the last few years, this door moves from side to side. It has an acrobatic-looking action as it closes and opens. Torggler is using steel, glass and other materials which can be colored and are relatively lightweight making door appear easy to operate. There even is a “soft edge” version that won’t pinch. Like many innovative products, this door is a custom piece made by the artist in a variety of colors and materials.
