Color themes plus size variations give holiday flowers a garden-gathered look
These days simple seems most luxurious to me, both for every day as well as special occasions and holidays. That extends to cut flowers which I prefer over all other forms of decoration throughout the house and particularly on tables and mantels. But rather than depend on specific blooms at this time of the year, I look at color and size for floral inspiration – an idea put forward by Nicolette Owen, of Nicolette Camille Floral Design in Brooklyn, New York and coauthor of “Bringing Nature Home,” (Rizzoli, 2012, $32.50). “When selecting flowers, look for a few different shapes and textures,” Owen advises. “Think about leafy material, a showy face flower, and then maybe some wispy, delicate elements.” In a classical style footed vase [top] blooms in shades of red with silvery green leaves evoke Christmas holiday flowers with traditional color but without being doctrinaire.
White and green – such as “Toulouse-Lautrec” roses and dicentra foliage always feels fresh for the holidays, perhaps because the blooms are the color of snow. Large as well as small white flowers add visual interest to this simple bouquet.
Large white English roses combined with sterling silver buds and green leaves provides a delicate variation on a mostly white holiday flowers theme.
A sweet combination of pink garden roses, lamb’s ears and rudbeckia pods are accented by long sprigs of oregano. Such soft colors seem almost summery but still blend beautifully with pine boughs and holly.
