A modern kitchen created by artisans wielding a router.
I ran across this kitchen last week while working on my Industrial Chic Corrugated Tin post. At first glance, I thought the island was fronted with tin but further research lead me to the South Carolina custom cabinet shop of Frost & Keading. The painted modern kitchen features fluted cabinetry — a continuous fluted pattern across all the doors and drawer fronts. In the antiques world this type of fluting is often seen in Swedish painted furniture where it serves as raised relief decoration on cabinet doors and drawers. Jane’s blue kitchen hutch has that kind of detailing on the doors. Sometimes, the fluted areas were shaped into diamonds. Contemporary fluted cabinets are a bit simpler but very appealing.
Today, precise computerized machinery and a router are paired with handwork at the bench by craftsmen. The island features a marble waterfall counter, Lee Industries upholstered stools, and round copper pendants that bring out the warm colors in the travertine flooring. It’s nice to see a white kitchen that is steps ahead of the trendy All White Kitchens of the past decade.
