This highly styled kitchen dining room combination gives the dining area a big hug.Wrapping a kitchen around a dining area is an idea we discussed in our post on Big Kitchen Banquettes. We haven’t seen this before and we feel it’s significant because it also suggests a modern way to redefine two key spaces in the house. Usually, a kitchen dining room combination occupies one end of a huge room where they coexist — a second approach in the Big Kitchen Banquettes post. Allison’s slideshow post on Dine in Kitchens showed big tables in the center of kitchens. In either case, the kitchen dominates.
The hybrid idea, a kitchen dining room combination in Deulonder Design’s Barcelona showroom, has a two-in-one floor plan. By way of a glass partition, the dining area is located in the heart of the working kitchen. Banquette seating helps conserve space. The overview [top] shows the table placement where an island would usually be in other kitchens. As a result, the working part of kitchen is L-shaped — the main prep area on the window wall has white cabinets and the pantry and storage leg of the L has black shelving with white accents. In the current contemporary style, there is open storage and hutches — but no upper wall cabinets.
With this plan, there is one room with exterior light that also is available to the dining space. The range hood (with the clock on the front) sits conveniently between the two large windows. When facing the range, the main sink and refrigerator are at the left end. At the end of the kitchen aisle in the direction of the pantry leg there are open shelves. Showroom kitchens tend to be heavily propped to provide idealized suggestions for function. In this case, that is outweighed by many unique layout and in-cabinet features.

What a fantastic kitchen. I think the ‘hugging’ of the dining table is brilliant and very innovative. I love the tea and spice storage. I also store my tea & spices in drawers, but I should have made them just a tiny bit deeper to handle smaller mason jars, as shown in this kitchen.
I’m a huge proponent of open shelving, but there is probably a bit too much even for me in this kitchen. But that is just me, in a very active kitchen with a cook who doesn’t mine routine dusting I’m sure it is manageable.
