Built-in double bunk beds for kids streamline any bedroom with a dash of fun.
The six-year-old in our family had his birthday last month – my first time trying out the big slide in the bouncy house. He has a bunk bed in his room and his 4-year old sister is waiting for the delivery her big-girl bed next week. So naturally these double built-in bunk beds for kids caught my eye. They couldn’t be more adorable, or practical.
A real-life story of how the sleek double bunks [top] were built for a family with three boys is charmingly reported by the Mom who wrote the August Fields blog. Before and after photos were included and she explained that her boys love the boldly striped West Elm duvets. Stairs make access handy and, she says, the beds are easy to make. However, the blog no longer seems to be online.
A variation on the theme includes two twins with balcony bunks in a similar khaki-green scheme but this one accented by red, including a colorful ladder.
Another quartet, installed on a corner, has staggered bunks with storage below one set. Looking closely, it’s interesting to see how well thought out this arrangement is – from the pierced detailing on the frames to a recessed area at the head of each bed with enough space for a basket to store necessities and perhaps a few favorite toys.
The dreamy blue and white color scheme, plus the nautical accents on these bunks make this look perfect for any beach house – even one in the woods.

Great built in bunk bed ideas! Our grandchildren, their cousins and friends all love their bunk room with built in bunk beds, built in queen size bed and a futon. They have room for 9 to sleep. They spend hours in the bunk room playing, reading and sometimes even sleeping. For the house with room for built in beds nothing can be more fun. Fair warning though is that making up the top built in bunks can be quite a trick.
You are right about making up the beds but worth it!
I so wanted ‘bunk rooms’ in our house, but hadn’t seen great examples like this and didn’t have a fully formed idea in my head, so they didn’t happen. I love how those August Fields ones (my longtime favorite example now) end up being such nice spaces for each child, with bookshelves, lights, and enclosure, so it’s like their own mini room.
We installed built in bunks in our bunkhouse at the Maine camp. I will send you some pics, Jane. We remodeled an old tool shed into a bunkhouse. It’s tiny but I love it.
If my sister’s former house had been larger (with larger bedrooms), and her triplets were younger (they are HS seniors now!), any or all of the bunk bed ideas would have been perfect for them. They all looked like fun rooms!
The only issue I see with rooms like these is how to convert them once the kids outgrow the bunks. They grow so quickly!
Do you have any plans for these that you did? What materials did you use and how much was the total project?
I am looking to do something like this for my boys but have been unable to find any plans! Can you please help! Thank you!
Hi Steven,
There was a long post about how to construct those bunk beds on a blog I linked to which, unfortunately, no longer seems to be online.
Wish I could help you more. Perhaps there is something similar on you tube? Otherwise, I expect you’d need to find a friend who is a good enough carpenter to look at the photo and then go from there.
All the best, Jane
