12 Days of Christmas Rug

December 13, 2008 by Jane T 5 Comments

12 days of Christmas rug - hand hooked rug illustrating the Christmas carol - Gump's via AtticmagEven the floor can help the house look festive with a 12 days of Christmas rug!

The hand hooked 12 Days of Christmas rug is based on the beloved English carol that dates back to the early 18th century, according to Wikipedia. Thought to originally have been a children’s Christmas memory game the song, according to Wikipedia, is “cumulative,” meaning that all the previous verses are repeated each time a new one is added. The twelve verses are well known and so beloved it’s not surprising to find them translated into a rectangular hooked Christmas rug, originally sold by Gump’s, the  high end San Francisco retailer. Sadly, this version of the rug is no longer available. Fortunately, the photo and two details were posted so its beauty has been preserved.

The rug shows all twelve gifts in the song. For anyone who doesn’t recall them, they are as follows:

  1. A partridge in a Pear Tree
  2. Two turtle doves
  3. Three french hens

4. Four calling birds which are sweetly rendered with a robin’s red breast and a jay’s blue features perched on a sprig of holly over the number 4.
5. Five gold rings.
6. Six geese a-laying
7. Seven swans a-swimming
8. Eight maids a-milking
9. Nine ladies dancing

10. Ten lords a-leaping. This “lord” almost looks like a Russian ballet dancer doesn’t he? So amusing.
11. Eleven pipers piping
12. Twelve drummers drumming

Anyone who owns one of these charming 12 days of Christmas rugs should preserve it well as the heirloom it has already become.

This rug was originally featured in a post from 2008. I searched for the source, but it appears the rug is no longer available. I did find a similar style by searching “12 days of Christmas hand hooked rug”. Good luck!

Sylva, I received a Touchstone catalog in the mail today – they have a 12 Days of Christmas rug now, but it’s round.

Do you know where I can order the twelve days of Christmas Rug originally sold by Gump’s?

Mine has been lost and it would be wonderful to replace it!

    Hi Beverley,

Gump’s has a Christmas theme rug, which is round. I’ve added the link below.

What a shame they seem to have discontinued this one as it certainly is a classic — so much charm.

Glad to see someone is thinking about Christmas early!

    Thanks for stopping by,

    Jane
