A glass door island brings the lightness of windows to the center of a classic white kitchen.
Something about this kitchen makes it a perennial favorite of mine and I believe it’s all the glass. Having a glass door island is so unusual. The better, of course, to show off items stored in shallow shelves facing away from the kitchen work space. While glass doors on the base of an island are usually considered no-gos, here they add a special architectural quality and lightness that works beautifully in this space. And this is also a massive island, large enough to seat six.
On the far wall, a trio of tall upper cabinets sit over over a pass through. Below there is an elaborate series of double-sided display shelves with brackets just underneath. Kitchen windows, adjacent to the cabinets, turn a corner and extend over the sink, letting in the sunlight.
A tall, dark wood cabinet in the corner functions like a piece of furniture rather than just another storage solution. It’s triple height and no doubt it was made that way to stop short of the elaborate ceiling moldings. For me, the dark cabinet disrupts the lightness of all the glass doors. But as it dwarfs the clunky, old-fashioned built-in refrigerator with cabinet panels, the fridge doesn’t look as prominent. Additionally, there’s a hint of the range wall on the right. But just a hint. Perhaps that’s why I always leave this kitchen wishing I had additional views.
