Concrete Trough Sink Kitchen

Erin Martin Design kitchen with raw steel range hood and concrete trough sink

Materials and design were kept simple, so large statements don’t overwhelm.

A Northern California kitchen boasts a raw metal custom range hood worthy of respect –  but it’s not what drew me.  It was the island’s over-sized concrete trough sink featuring a pair of faucets from Ann Sacks.  This outside-the-box Italian style home is located on a vineyard, so I can see the custom sink working in overdrive during large gatherings.  A comfortable kitchen dining space was created by pairing a small upholstered sofa with a zinc top table.  Two stools continue the industrial theme and provide portable extra seating but, let’s be honest, they are uncomfortable. … Continue Reading

Tin Ceiling Kitchen

kitchen with tin tile ceiling and elaborate detailing

In a kitchen super-abundant with detail the most striking feature – embossed tin tile  – jumps out.

I credit the intensity of the Gothic-arch pattern, the elaborate borders that function as crown molding and original silver color. Such a ceiling would be a knockout with almost any kitchen style.

Down at eye level — not to be outdone — there are details galore. First is the handsome arch-top antique armoire just tall enough to graze the crown. Muscular wood corbels with a matching beam  and additional embellishments, including a Romanesque arch flanked by relief brackets, are added to the hulking hood over the big Viking range.… Continue Reading

Hand-Finished Cherry Kitchen

natural cherry kitchen island with prep sink and built ins

The simplicity of natural wood and black granite has a vintage New England feeling.

In a Connecticut house, the owner recreated the hand-rubbed patina of vintage cabinets in her former kitchen with custom cherry cabinets finished with Waterlox. The conservative style continues with a Walker Zanger Alhambra Paja off-white ceramic tile back splash which is just slightly less rustic than the WZ Andalusia Moorish Gold limestone floor tile.

While the kitchen is used often for entertaining the appliances are modest — the range top is by Viking and ovens, microwave and warming drawer  by Thermidor. The main sink is Elkay stainless steel with a Delta faucet and dispenser.… Continue Reading

Neutral Wood Kitchen

natural wood cabinet kitchen with stainless steel counters

It sounds odd to say this kitchen reminds me of a cushy sofa but it does.

Like a basic sectional, it’s comfortable and all neutrals – medium-tone wood cabinets with squared staple handles and frosted glass doors flanking the window and classic stainless steel counters.

The range is off center but the placement of the chimney hood between two solid-door cabinets helps keep it integrated so the focus stays on the window — which lines up with the island topped by cream-colored stone. With no accent color, no window valance – nothing to detract from the “green” aura and simple lines this kitchen will never look dated.… Continue Reading

Mission Style Kitchen

natural wood mission style kitchen with awning windows

A natural wood beach-house kitchen offers an unrestrained purity of materials.

The four square motif, typical of Mission, appears on the raised eating bar that divides the monochromatic natural oak kitchen from the adjacent great room.

Awning windows, industrial pendant lights, an English-style work table/island with turned legs and tiles set into the ends  help mix things up and avoid a strictly period look. Perimeter cabinets turn right past the awning windows and become a stepped up work space/eating bar that also conceals dishware storage.

Mission Barn Kitchen

mission style cabinets in a barnlike space

Mission-style cabinets in a barn-like space creates a unique wood-centric fusion

Windows set high in a soaring open space let wonderful natural light into this galley kitchen.  Exposed timbers set off the wood of the Mission-style natural wood cabinets with a hutch resembling Hoosier cabinets on each side of the pro-style range. Hutches  are backed with beadboard and feature a row of tiles as a low integral backplash and  stone counters. A spacious eating bar has Mission medallion detailing, a furniture baseboard and bar-stool seating for four. The sink is concealed there.

Overhead, between the windows, a vertical swatch of natural stone hints at a chimney.A clever grid below the rafters provides areas of solid wood which anchors long pendant lights.… Continue Reading
