Bold Bathroom Color

Swimming pool blue. Peony pink. Granny Smith green. When one of these pow! colors covers any significant surface area in a bathroom there’s bound to be a strong reaction – often involuntary and physical according to color theorists. Plus, it’s all ramped up in contrast with white or ivory used for trim and sanitary fixtures, especially in smaller spaces. I’ve long admired the tropical feel of the expansive turquoise tile bathroom [above] designed by John Stedila in a New York loft. When I first saw this, I thought 'whoa, who lives there?' One of the owners is a twenty-something former model from Rio, which helps explain a yen for the shiny, sand-colored epoxy resin floor in addition to an ocean’s-worth of glass-mosaic shimmer. Interior design is the art of the personal. With so much of one color it can be difficult to see how the bath is arranged. A mirror partition set on a stone base (at the left in back) partially screens the step down to an open shower. The mirror also reflects a deep whirlpool tub across the room. Space is organized more traditionally by Amanda Nesbit, who wrapped a cerise melon-pattern Manuel Canovas wallpaper around a bathtub, evoking youthful energetic passion and a romantic garden. Nesbit always uses bright pink well and here, plays up the glamour with a silver ottoman. (via HB 3/08)

A smallish cottage-style bath emboldened by pavilion stripes on the walls and ceiling would be great for a morning person. Designer Leslie Klotz used Benjamin Moore’s Apple green (which reproduces as yellow) and Decorator’s white to paint the big tent effect. This is pro style that doesn’t require a huge budget to duplicate. The porcelain Deco light fixture over the mirror is similar to Rejuvenation’s $95 Selma fixture in white. A possible sub for the mirror with gold stars can be found at Wisteria, Ballard Designs or Anthropologie. And those popular-again 2-inch white hex Deco floor tiles are modestly priced per square foot at home improvement stores. (via HB 7/08)
