Behind an Aga cooker, an elaborate subway tile niche with two patterns

Constant heat from an Aga requires a hefty wall of tile behind it. This one, in an English kitchen, has an especially handsome insert of white subway tiles set in a diagonal herringbone pattern and framed by a beaded decorative tile liner and cap molding. The medallion is set into a field of staggered horizontal subway tile to great effect.  A prominent mantel hood balances the bulk of the cooker and frames it with painted corbels.
