Black and White Patterned Kitchen

black and white tile - black and white patterned kitchen with unique tile floor, gray cabinets and open shelves with a skirted sink base - Foxtrotter via Atticmag

A dark palette is anything but boring when a black and white tiles and a mix of patterns are involved.

I am drawn to darker rooms these days; must be the bright springtime sun. Although I’m not brave enough to do this in my home, I find the mix of patterns and limited color palette intriguing.  But black and white tiles in the floor of this kitchen sets the theme and make it all work. The upper cabinet and open shelves are painted flat gray against a black wall.  The rest of the kitchen is painted a bright white, creating a dramatic niche. … Continue Reading

Decorative Interior Barn Doors

decorative interior barn doors Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne by Martyn Lawrence Bullard - AD via Atticmag

Simple wooden doors become a masterpiece with artwork and trim.

Interior barn doors are a currently trendy (they are everywhere), but what first caught my eye wasn’t the hardware or vivid color, but the theatrical horse with Siamese cat at his back leg.  This track mounted folk art painting was actually once part of a barn. It now hangs in the owner’s home office, hiding her desk and files during therapy sessions. I would spend my hour on the couch speechless, soaking it in.  My wheels have been spinning since seeing it in January.  This could easily be recreated to include subject matter close to your heart.… Continue Reading

Urban Chic Kitchen

modern white kitchen cabinets and exposed brick walls

Mixing styles creates a sophisticated industrial kitchen.

I’ve been a magazine junkie most of my adult life and in the last decade I’ve added several European journals to my list.  This industrial chic London kitchen found its way into my idea file for several reasons.  While I surround myself with vintage, I’m also attracted to rooms with a juxtaposition of styles.  The exposed brick walls and original wood floors paired with sleek white cabinets and stainless steel counters make me want to explore loft living.  In my mind’s eye, the wall to the left of the island was also washed brick, with a few lower cabinets and open shelving.… Continue Reading

Rustic Master Bath Retreat

rustic master bath custom sink console with open shelf

The custom tub surround is reminiscent of a French wall fountain

Wood salvaged from a North Carolina barn is rustic, yet romantic in this master bath retreat.  A Waterworks Cambridge tub nestles underneath an expanse of windows.  Its custom surround is washed in an oyster shell palette, with a backsplash detail and a wall mounted faucet reminiscent of a French wall fountain with trough.  The tone of the mirrored doors echo wood across the room.

Undermount sinks don’t distract from the marble topped console, which was based on an antique French draper’s table.  Tuscan brass Rohl Bridge faucets compliment the cottage’s metal windows. … Continue Reading

Timeless Modern Master Bath

master bath - master with modern egg-shaped freestanding oval bathtub with floor mounted tub filler - via Atticmag

The modern egg-shaped tub in a master bath creates a perfect sanctuary for a long soak.

In this luxurious master bath, washed horizontal wooden planks wrap the tub alcove and continue beyond. Set against that background is a freestanding Waterworks .25 tub, with sensuous curves said by the homeowner to be remarkably comfortable — a tub everyone should experience at least once.  It is served by a floor mounted filler, while the controls are located on the adjacent wall.  Floor tiles are handcrafted Peacock Pavers, a concrete limestone-lookalike.  Artwork brings in the look of the copper.

The sink area is a lesson in restraint. … Continue Reading

White Pine Beach House Kitchen

simple rustic whitewashed pine kitchen with open cabinets

Whitewashed eastern white pine brings the colors of sand inside

Simplistic and rustic are usually not the first words that come to mind when I’m asked to describe a beach house.  But that is exactly what the owners of this timber-frame home received from their architect.  It is located in Seaside, Florida,  a “new urbanist” town that began development in the 1980s and is famous for its architecture, walk-ability and urban spaces.

The Florida Panhandle is known for its sugar white beaches, and the water and paint mixture washed over the eastern white pine brings the sand colors inside.  Open cabinets and a vintage plate rack display every day dishes. … Continue Reading
