Luxurious Christmas Mantels

luxurious Christmas mantel with natural cypress garland, magnolia leaves and pinecones from StyleBlueprint

A pair of decorated mantels worth remembering.

Custom Irish stockings line a holiday mantel encompassing dark green, chocolate brown, antique gold and warm ivory.  Evergreen garlands fall gracefully to the floor, while raffia tied white tulip bundles adorn vases on top.

The stockings play second fiddle to the natural cypress garland laced with seeded eucalyptus.  Oversized pinecones, fresh green apples and magnolias leaves anchor each end.  Cream stockings are hung with chartreuse ribbon that is repeated on the Christmas tree and presents underneath.

Christmas Stockings

Letter to Santa Christmas stocking from Sundance Catalog

A collection of holiday fireplace mantel stockings.

Whether you’re expecting a lump of coal or Italian chocolates, a beautiful handmade Christmas stocking is a mantel must.  This trio of embroidered stockings were handcrafted in India and include an assortment of eclectic embellishments.  Bells, sequins, tinsels, tassels and lace are artistically combined with metallic threads, rich colors and fine gauze fabrics for Boho-ho-ho decor.

A white felt Madeleine stocking features an embroidered tree and appliqué bird accented with jeweled sequins.

The sequins and metallic threads on this duo by Kim Seybert will add sparkle.  The detail on the Ethnic stocking [left] and pattern on the Ikat have a global vibe.… Continue Reading

Design Your Own Christmas Stockings

design your own Christmas stocking by 1154 LILL Studio

Express individuality while creating a holiday tradition.

I ran across an interactive website that allows you to design Christmas stockings.  1154 LILL Studio has three stocking designs and over a hundred fabrics, so expect to spend some time playing with colors and patterns.  If you need help selecting a coordinating fabric, suggestions of complimentary fabrics are listed.  The stockings are reversible for twice the fun.  I selected a medium lightweight velvet fabric, Turquoise Trellis, for the exterior of the Holly stocking [above] and a lightweight printed floral, Mint Julep, interior.  The Noel stocking [below]  has a woven fabric with raised rings, O-rangutan, exterior and a medium basket weave, Carrot Cake, interior that created a textured tone-on-tone.… Continue Reading

Vintage Christmas Mantel

vintage wood sock stretchers used in lieu of Christmas stockings

Wood forms originally used to dry socks replicate the usual holiday stockings.

7 is my lucky number.  This is our seventh Christmas in our home, but the first time I am happy with the great room mantel decorations.  I began purchasing vintage sock stretchers from etsy sellers a few months ago. Too many actually, as I have extras, including the cutest pair for children that are being enjoyed elsewhere.

I first recall seeing wooden forms being used in lieu of stockings in this magazine photograph and tucked the idea away.

Everything on the mantel, with the exception of the pine boughs, is there year round – the finials, a vintage leather hat box, a gorgeous deer rack, the stack of leather books and an antique metal sheep bank. … Continue Reading

Christmas Room Variations

Traditional decorating with a twist, alternative locations for holiday decor

This has been such a hectic season it wouldn’t surprise me if many of us were a bit tardy in getting to our seasonal decorating tasks. While most people have their traditions which dictate where the tree and the gifts are put each year, I thought these alternative spots and strategies might offer some interesting ideas.

Tree in the Foyer – A Norway spruce, dusted with white snow spray, is parked in the nook, right in front of a hallway chest. The cotton rug provides a makeshift tree skirt and surface for presents while giving focus to the open area.… Continue Reading

Christmas Mantels

Natural greenery, ornaments and luxurious ribbon adorn mantels for the holiday season

Pine bough garlands are worked up with dried berries, pearl-and-amethyst batons, mercury-glass ornaments and satin bows by British designer William Yeoward. Ribbons and decor were purchased at the English passementerie house VV Rouleaux, which provides a handy online  how-to for two simple Christmas bows.

Floral guru Zezé draped the living room mantel of New York City designer Charlotte Moss with beige velvet ribbon caught up with pine cones and boughs plus tree ornaments in two colors and various sizes.

In the Moss dining room, pine boughs and cones, orange ribbons and kumquats on the vine echo the designer’s sunny citrus-hued tablescape.… Continue Reading
