Black & Zebrawood Looking much like a minimalist media room, this black and exotic-wood kitchen uses African zebrawood veneer on the base of an island topped with polished granite. Wood runs behind the cook top and hood, doing double duty as back- splash and focal point. A wall of sleek Euro-style black cabinets and tambour doors give the built-in ovens the visual jazz of flat-screen TVs.
Wolf Cappuccino The winning Wolf/Sub-Zero design contest kitchen for 2008 is just like Cappuccino : milky-white subway tiles on top, Java-tone (cherry Wood Mode) cabinets and floors below. Tile to the ceiling (and no upper cabs) sets off the Pro 48 glass door S-Z fridge. Italian soap-stone counters blend in. The sink off in a side space lets the Wolf range and Miele coffee system take center stage. (Photo: Wolf/Sub-Zero. Design, hammersmith.net)

Black & Wenge Wenge is a tropical wood that marries well with glossy black surfaces and is a popular choice. As a hard wood it’s suitable for a and for countertops like the one in this elegant Burbidge Mezzo ccoking center. A pair of Miele ovens sit flush with the sleek cabinetry, a key design concept.
Fusion Slate counters and hot-rolled steel floors are sleek elements of the mixed message of the U-shaped family kitchen. The theme comes from the mix of the warm wood refectory table against the coolness of all the metal tones, also carried through by the built in Sub Zero and pro style range. Cabinets, installed in the plinthlike modern style, vary in depth on both sides - another style blender. (Source: Debbie Travis' Painted House)

Midnight Ikea Minimalist Ikea black cabinets, combined with a custom stainless countertop and fit- tings, gives this galley kitchen a stunning and luxurious simplicity. The detail (far right) shows off the custom stainless counter with a short backsplash featuring an integral double sink. The gas ooktop is also neatly built in. Cove lighting acts like illuminated crown molding and helps diminish glare off the stainless.

Cool Metal This aluminum, stainless and glass mix offers maximum stylishness and restaurant-level durability. Wide-bodied base cabinets and drawers have the scale of store showcases. Bifold wall cabinet doors flip up and out of the way, providing a well-lighted storage panorama. Countertop is white glass. ALU2000 by Poggenpohl; sink by Blanco. (www.poggenpohl-usa.com)
Monochrome White Sleek lines and the crisp coolness characterize the sophisticated style of this all white and glass kitchen by Chicago designer Mick de Giulio’s. Refinements include white marble on the island, a range ventilator concealed behind a flat panel, and illumination above open shelves over the sink. (Source: www.degiulio.org)

Dutch Glass Countertop The
green counter of tempered, under-painted glass has an etched surface.
It’s a novel look, developed in Holland. In combination with white
melamine cabinets, and iconic stainless stools, the overall style has
a definite 60s twist reminiscent of designer André Courrèges. (Source:

Hot Chocolate When combined with white and glass, wenge wood has a chocolate brown look. The tone of the wood really pops as a horizontal accent on slab-front drawers of classic, glossy white Burbidge cabinets. (Source: www.burbidge.co.uk)

Nearly Windowless A home in Arizona, built for a hot climate, used a clerestory window
placed just under the roof to help keep out the heat. The nearly
windowless look and stainless steel counters and appliances add to the
minimalist space. Note the modern sculpture placed over the sink.

Blue Resin Ice-blue cast resin by Atta Inc. was used for the island, countertops and backsplash of this kitchen where appliances were downplayed or hidden behind sheets of white Corian by designer Amparo Vollert. The super-minimalist result, with a nearly Arctic palette, provides maximum lightness and minimal volume -- one solution to a small space problem. (Source: NY Mag 9/03)

Tech-y Plus Natural Chicago architect Stanley Tigerman designed the Corian tabletop with his signature pierced steel circles in the base (foreground) tp play off the warmth of the wood-grain Poliform cabinets. The gray terrazzo floor blends well with stainless appliances and accents. Yet it's the refinements that count here: lovely symmetry of the oven stack neatly balanced by the built in refrigerator, and the working island and eating area elegantly lined up with the window and lighting. Walnut Zero-Radius An open Euro-style kitchen was created by designer Jill Crawford using Ikea carcasses fronted and backed by custom walnut doors and panels. Carrara marble countertops, Blanco sinks and faucets, and a run of glass-front, horizontal upper cabinets (with doors that lift up) complete the look. (Photo: Jill Crawford)

Ikea Birch For a budget kitchen there is no value like Ikea. Swedes have always used birch for furniture so these birch veneer cabinets, combined with open storage units and the classic Avsikt aluminum- edge glass doors, make this modest kitchen especially photo worthy. A laminate countertop looks great with all the other elements. (Source: Renovation Style)
No Upper Cabinets The richness
of a high-gloss cherry floor dominates the post-industrial attitude of
this kitchen with its multiple metal surfaces. Base cabinets are light
blond wood but with no uppers, and limited exterior views, the wall
materials and treatments become enhanced design elements. As befits a
beach house, there is a shiplike aura. .(Source:

Shaker Moderne Simple lines, peg joining and tapered legs of American Shaker furniture have been borrowed for this brand of rich minimalism paired to white subway tile and stainless. Purple Accent Maple Pow! purple gives the tried-and-true combination of glass and maple cabinets a dash of impetuousness and 1950s flair. A wealth of detail -- narrow utility drawers, a modern integral clock, open storage cubbyholes -- show how many features can be packed into any cabinet run. (Source: www.burbidge.co.uk)

Carrara Marble Backsplash The open storage is very clever in this 1905 San Francisco apartment kitchen, renovated as a hybrid historical/industrial. Marble adds horizontal and vertical richness, while the moveable glass scrims over the wood shelves, embedded with lights, are the most minimal of upper cabinets. Other features: Shaw's fireclay sink, walnut shelving, open pot and pan pullouts, Miele dishwasher. (Source: Dwell)
