Sunday, December 13th, 2009

A carved iron-gated driveway leads to the Betty Crocker Estate
The Betty Crocker Estate is for sale.  Yes, that Betty Crocker.  But how could that be?  We all thought she was a fictional person.

The Victorian Gothic Revival brick home is listed for $1,295,000.  It sits on 8 acres and features olive trees, ancient oaks and a [...]

Thanksgiving Block Party

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

In my neighborhood Macy’s puts on an annual party – the Thanksgiving Day parade, which takes place two blocks from where I live and features giant balloon characters that thrill kids and grown ups alike. Preparations begin on Wednesday afternoon when the NYPD closes off our block and New Yorkers and visitors stream down the [...]

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

New York designer Bradley Stephens – who is as engaging as the dramatic room he designed with singer Annie Lennox in mind – was on hand to talk about his ideas on opening day of the Inspired Designs showhouse.
Bradley had so much to share we started to film a video — then halfway through the [...]

Clarice Cliff is a highly collectible, mid-20th Century English ceramic artist who, as Cara Antiques’ Connie Aranosian explains on our [...]

Blue-and-White Chinese Porcelain

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Blue and white Chinese porcelain is abundant and popular. Its importance spanned several centuries. Dealer Ita J. Howe specializes in K’ang Hsi blue and white, made from about 1680 to 1722, which takes its name from the emperor. As she explains at the NY Ceramics Fair, the quality of the pigment and detail is what [...]

Speed Oven in Action

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

On a visit to a kitchen products fair we saw the new convection-microwave speed-oven technology of the Turbochef oven cook food record time, with delicious results (we tasted). Warning: the company rep gave us a very “enthusiastic” explanation of how the oven works while we watched the biscuits rise.
