I never thought I’d swoon over a kitchen with nature wood-tone cabinets, lavender tile and blue-violet counters. But this is one knockout babe, done up in summer florals that read from cobalt to lavender – a homage to the range of colors found in hydrangeas. Clearly this Massachusetts kitchen belongs to a gardener, one who adores blue hydrangeas and wants to live with their vibrant color throughout the summer and year-round.

Today, purple adds a vibrant and youthful originality.

Not long ago, finding a room painted purple in a house was one of those “what were they thinking?” moments. Often it was a remnant (sometimes hidden behind wallpaper) of the psychedelic ’60s, the last time violet (as the hue is properly named) was seen extensively. Though plum made a brief appearance in 2001, purples are shown frequently now in part because the Skittles generation adores and accepts candy colors at home.

Given the ongoing popularity of white and gray kitchens, finding one with eccentric purple base cabinets is unusual. Even more rare is purple used as part of a very sophisticated scheme including drab vanilla walls and gray-violet accents.… Continue Reading


Lavender Subway Tile Kitchen

Unusual colors for tile and walls energize white cabinets and Carrara marble

The amazing color of this bespoke kitchen is handled beautifully by designer Christopher Peacock. Pale gray-lavender subway tiles are fortified by the stronger lavender wall and window color, and then tied into Carrara marble counters which have an elegant ogee edge that also rims the custom marble farm sink. Faucets are Waterworks Aero Retro.

White cabinets, trimmed with traditional bin pulls and latches, act as a backdrop. Stained maple is used as the drip rail for the farmsink. Maple also is an element, along with walnut, in the checkerboard end-cut  butcher block counter on the island.… Continue Reading
