Over the last ten years, the 2003 Something’s Gotta Give kitchen (actually a movie set) provided a much-copied formula for a popular black and white look: white Victorian-style cabinets with black counters and accents. That scheme created crisp, high contrast drama. The latest variation on the black and white theme is simpler. I’m seeing white kitchens with light counters and only a single dark accent — a black French range. Both Lacanche and CornfuFé offer stunning French-made ranges in a variety of black and near-black finishes, both matte and glossy.… Continue Reading
Kitchens of all styles with black-and-white themes and black or white kitchen cabinets.
Black cabinets and matching French range provide a modernized twist on the black and white kitchen.
In a kitchen designed by Daniel Cuevas for a new, art-filled home in Beverly Hills, the cabinets are key to creating the elegant luxe style that feels French and just a bit Deco but is thoroughly chic and modern.
The furniture in question is black steel with nickel banding – a custom design from Urban Archaeology called Lenox. While the sleek base cabinets are reminiscent of La Cornue’s classic Cuisine de Chateau line, the uppers have unique doors composed of a nickel-tone metal mesh over a metal backing panel — which gives them the look of an industrial folding screen panels.… Continue Reading
I’ve long admired this handsome black and white kitchen by design great Steven Gambrel.
What’s interesting to me is how it skillfully employs the ultra-popular black-and-white theme though not in the usual way. Rather than focusing on white cabinets with black counters, the designer has taken it very boldly to the floor and walls through the use of tile. Glossy black bricks tiles behind the range and on the remaining backsplash essentially create black walls articulated by high contrast light grout. Equally dramatic and even more muscular in terms of effect is the 3-D illusion floor created by a black, white and gray small-scale pattern on cement tiles.… Continue Reading
A fashionable color scheme translates into an ultrachic kitchen design.
This historic Italianate townhouse is dressed for any occasion in its own version of the little black dress. Tailored cabinetry and a custom range hood were painted pitch-black. The raised panel molding is painted white for contrast – like a string of pearls. Marble counters and an undermount sink offer ample space for prepping, and are lit by a barn-style pendant. The natural wood island with lower pot shelf introduces more surface and storage. Open wall shelves are adorned with scrolled wrought iron brackets. A large mirror backsplash is an uncommon, but glamorous, choice for behind the range. … Continue Reading
A dark palette is anything but boring when a mix of patterns are involved.
I am drawn to darker rooms these days – must be the bright springtime sun. Although I’m not brave enough to do this in my home, I find the mix of patterns and limited color palette intriguing. The upper cabinet and open shelves are painted flat gray against a black wall. The rest of the kitchen is painted a bright white, creating a dramatic niche. A mix of two patterned floor tiles are sprinkled with a third design, with what appears to be a touch of grey and yellow.… Continue Reading
Chalkboard paint isn’t just for kids’ rooms any more.
Last week we showed a wallpaper-illusion console sink bathroom (scroll down one post) with chalkboard-painted walls and handmade chalk designs. Blackboard paint also can add dramatic contrast to a conventional black-and-white kitchen and lets you transform the write-on wall into one that’s purely practical or decorative. Plus it’s quick and easy to erase and change, or embellish with pictures or clocks.
Painting a black accent wall also can help make a narrow room appear wider since the dark color makes the wall visually advance.
But the chalk paint craze also has created a wide variety of options and new boutique brands. … Continue Reading
