Nate Berkus’ Greenhouse Kitchen

Nate’s glamorous black and white greenhouse kitchen in his NYC penthouse is also family-friendly.

Celebrity designer Nate Berkus and his husband designer Jeremiah Brent have a stunning black and white greenhouse kitchen [top] in their newly renovated penthouse on Fifth Avenue, in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. The showstopper feature is the 17-foot long curved glass greenhouse style roof that floods the kitchen with light and views in three directions.  Black lacquer cabinets are right on trend, as are the prominent brass accents on the island and on the sink wall. I’m focusing on the kitchen here but the entire 3-bedroom duplex is featured on the next cover of Architectural Digest.… Continue Reading

Cast Iron Stove Island Kitchen

cast iron stove repurposed as a kitchen island with Carrara marble top and prep sink by Studio Peregalli - Elledecor via Atticmag

A 19th-century cast iron stove found new life as the base of an island in a London mansion kitchen.

Square, and not extremely large, this unique cast iron stove island has amazing green cred plus extraordinary character and presence — from the contrasting brass inserts in the doors to the beefy handle on the former front of the range.

It’s one thing to repurpose a wooden antique such as a hutch, dresser or even an old piano — which was done for a quirky Victorian home I featured in my Old Piano Kitchen post. But for this 1881 brick house restoration, Roberto Peregalli and his design partner Laura Sartori Rimini required specialized craftsmen to essentially remake an antique stove.… Continue Reading

All Black Kitchen Kitchen of the Year

all black kitchen of the year for 2014 by Steven Miller - Whirlpool gas cooktop, Gold Wall Ovens and Kraftmaid Onyx cabinets - house beautiful via atticmag

Behold House Beautiful’s all black Kitchen of the Year in the 2014 San Francisco Designer Showcase house, a 1920s mansion with a view of the bay.

Opposites attract. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the mainstream press has begun to call the kitchen color shift — from all white to all black — a trend. For bloggers like me this is hardly news. Back in March of this year, my Dark Kitchen Drama post, documented the all black kitchen and nearly black kitchens I’d been seeing, including a designer beauty in Sweden. Modern all black kitchens have been around quite some time as four black kitchen posts (below) also show.… Continue Reading

Black French Range in a White Kitchen

black French range by CornueFe in a white Victorian style kitchen – Brooks&Falotico via Atticmag

Stove color makes a statement in a kitchen. Black implies serious culinary business.

Over the last ten years, the 2003 Something’s Gotta Give kitchen (actually a movie set) provided a much-copied formula for a popular black and white look: white Victorian-style cabinets with black counters and accents. That scheme created crisp, high contrast drama. The latest variation on the black and white theme is simpler. I’m seeing white kitchens with light counters and only a single dark accent — a black French range. Both Lacanche and CornfuFé offer stunning French-made ranges in a variety of black and near-black finishes, both matte and glossy.… Continue Reading

Black Steel Custom Cabinet Kitchen

black kitchen with Lenox steel and nickel black cabinets - Veranda via Atticmag

In a mostly black kitchen, the cabinets and matching French range turn the black and white kitchen trend inside out.

In a kitchen designed by Daniel Cuevas for a new, art-filled home in Beverly Hills, the cabinets are the key to creating the elegant luxe style. They are black and this is a black kitchen. It feels French, and just a bit Deco, but is thoroughly chic and modern.

As a trend, black kitchens come and go. We saw them in the 1960s, and again in the 1980s. Here, the black cabinets that create the look are black steel with nickel banding – a custom design from Urban Archaeology called Lenox.… Continue Reading

Black and White Illusion Kitchen

Steven Gambrel kitchen - black and white New York illusion floor kitchen - S.R.Gambrel via Atticmag

I’ve long admired the great design of a handsome black and white Steven Gambrel kitchen.

What’s interesting to me about this iconic Steven Gambrel kitchen is how it skillfully employs the ultra-popular black-and-white theme though not in the usual way. Rather than focusing on white cabinets with black counters, the designer has taken it very boldly to the floor and walls through the use of tile. Glossy black bricks tiles behind the range and on the remaining backsplash essentially create black walls articulated by high contrast light grout. Equally dramatic, and even more muscular in terms of effect, is the 3-D illusion floor created by a black, white and gray small-scale pattern on cement tiles.… Continue Reading
