Five simple arrangements (+ 2 tutorials) all using seasonal colors and blooms.

When friends came to visit this past weekend I needed fresh flowers for the dinner table. In a rush to get everything ready, I hastily grabbed some white and yellow hydrangeas from the flower section in the supermarket. What a fail! At this festive time of the year what I truly wanted was a bouquet based on red, white and green to sing out the season in the dining room.

White flowers are like winter white clothes – so appealing and classic. And white hydrangea blooms punctuated with bright red berries [top] – so cool and unexpected – is an idea I love.… Continue Reading

Alabama Stone Cottage Christmas

Allison's mercury glass-like Christmas tree decorations

A look at my personal collection of new and cherished holiday decor.

Since building our lakeside cottage, I’ve made a conscious effort to bring a touch of the outdoors in when decorating. Christmastime is no exception.  By chance, I recently ran across a holiday collection in Lowe’s featuring over-sized champagne color pinecones with a mercury glass look, perfect for our home in the woods.

Mr. Shops loves the way the six inch tall pinecones “light up,” almost from within, highlighting the softly glittered edges.  Drop-shaped ornaments in champagne, gold, chocolate and copper hang along side laser cut wood snowflakes.  The new ornaments are all shatterproof, ideal with our small herd of pets and young grandchildren.… Continue Reading

Join me for Part One of my 15-museum-shop holiday gift buying guide. And stop back on Friday for Part Two!

Two years ago I did a virtual cross-country tour of ten museum shops to find home décor gifts for my first-ever Museum Store Christmas post. This year it became a two-part spree with three times as many gifts to consider! I’ve always loved museum stores and, years ago, applied for a job at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York at the start of their gift-shop program. That went to someone else but my passion for museum stores continued because so many of the items are inspired by their collections or specially curated for their design quality.… Continue Reading
