The holiday decorating season officially kicks off at the end of the month and this year a delightful photo of fall flower pumpkins crossed my desk. The work of floral designer Alix Astir, of Trellis Fine Florals, in New York City, the photo [top] showed a trio of faux pumpkins made entirely of different colored mums. Chrysanthemums are on every doorstep this year and their bright hues accent the autumn leaves that have been falling for the past few weeks. I saw this as my chance to bring them indoors — especially since the designer was generous enough to send me a step-by-step tutorial for making them.… Continue Reading
Specialty home decorating ideas for holidays.
When friends came to visit this past weekend I needed fresh flowers for the dinner table. In a rush to get everything ready, I hastily grabbed some white and yellow hydrangeas from the flower section in the supermarket. What a fail! At this festive time of the year what I truly wanted was a Christmas flowers bouquet based on red, white and green to sing out the season in the dining room.
White flowers are like winter white clothes – so appealing and classic. And white hydrangea blooms punctuated with bright red berries [top] – so cool and unexpected – is an idea I love.… Continue Reading
Since building our lakeside cottage I’ve made a conscious effort to bring a touch of the outdoors inside when decorating. Christmastime is no exception. By chance, I recently ran across a holiday collection in Lowe’s featuring oversized champagne- color pinecone tree ornaments with a mercury glass look, perfect for our home in the woods.

Drop-shaped ornaments in champagne, gold, chocolate and copper hang along side laser-cut wood snowflakes. The new ornaments are all shatterproof, ideal with our small herd of pets and young grandchildren.… Continue Reading

Two years ago I did a virtual cross-country tour of ten museum shops to find home décor gifts for my first-ever Museum Store Christmas post. This year it’s become a two-part spree with three times as many gifts to consider! I’ve always loved museum stores and, years ago, applied for a job at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York at the start of their gift-shop program. That went to someone else but my passion for museum store Christmas gifts continued because so many of the items are inspired by their collections or specially curated for the holidays.… Continue Reading
