Join me for our seventh virtual yuletide tablescape tour. The theme for 2014 is Royal Copenhagen Christmas Seal tables.

The spirit of a children’s Christmas is the keynote for the annual display of lavishly decorated Royal Copenhagen Christmas Seal tables. And for the seventh year, Atticmag and I are pleased to join in this special celebration with a virtual tour of the event.

As in the past, a prominent group of Danes are chosen by the legendary porcelain brand to create holiday tables using RC’s iconic porcelain patterns at the porcelain maker’s flagship store in Copenhagen. For 2014, six artists, designers and personalities have shared their yuletide table visions, in partnership with the 110-year-old Danish Christmas Seal Foundation, a children’s welfare charity.… Continue Reading

Fall Flower Pumpkins

fall flower pumpkins by Alix Astir, of Trellis Fine Florals - atticmag

A trio of brightly colored flower pumpkins make a vibrant centerpiece for fall holidays.

The holiday decorating season officially kicks off at the end of the month and this year a delightful photo of fall flower pumpkins crossed my desk.  The work of floral designer Alix Astir, of Trellis Fine Florals, in New York City, the photo [top] showed a trio of faux pumpkins made entirely of different colored mums. Chrysanthemums are on every doorstep this year and their bright hues accent the autumn leaves that have been falling for the past few weeks. I saw this as my chance to bring them indoors — especially since the designer was generous enough to send me a step-by-step tutorial for making them.… Continue Reading

Five simple arrangements of Christmas flowers (+ 2 tutorials) all use seasonal colors and blooms.

When friends came to visit this past weekend I needed fresh flowers for the dinner table. In a rush to get everything ready, I hastily grabbed some white and yellow hydrangeas from the flower section in the supermarket. What a fail! At this festive time of the year what I truly wanted was a Christmas flowers bouquet based on red, white and green to sing out the season in the dining room.

White flowers are like winter white clothes – so appealing and classic. And white hydrangea blooms punctuated with bright red berries [top] – so cool and unexpected – is an idea I love.… Continue Reading

Alabama Stone Cottage Christmas

Christmas decor - Allison's Christmas tree decorations - Atticmag

A look at my personal collection of new and cherished Christmas decor.

Since building our lakeside cottage I’ve made a conscious effort to bring a touch of the outdoors inside when decorating. Christmastime is no exception.  By chance, I recently ran across a holiday collection in Lowe’s featuring oversized champagne- color pinecone tree ornaments with a mercury glass look, perfect for our home in the woods.

Mr. Shops loves the way the six-inch tall pinecones “light up,” almost from within, highlighting the softly glittered edges.  Drop-shaped ornaments in champagne, gold, chocolate and copper hang along side laser-cut wood snowflakes.  The new ornaments are all shatterproof, ideal with our small herd of pets and young grandchildren.… Continue Reading
