My Laundry Room Redo

felted rug pad from Rug Pad USA via Atticmag

Minor changes make major visual improvements in a redone laundry room.

A few things have changed in our main level laundry room since moving into our Alabama Stone Cottage.  It’s my “pretty” (and functional) recently redone laundry room, a well-deserved space after making do with a corner of the unfinished basement in our last house for 20+ years.  I started looking for the perfect Soumak runner for the long, narrow room a bit too late. When I finally found Mr. Perfect Rug it had been discontinued and the twelve-foot-long runners were sold out.  After a few months of sulking, I started searching again and decided on this brown and ivory hand knotted flatweave by Kalaty (Su-148 from Payless Rugs).… Continue Reading

More Repurposing Ideas

Alternative uses for some every day objects.

Repurposing objects is a quick and easy way to showcase our unique personalities. So I wanted to show you these repurposing ideas for some collectible items. It’s also a way to clean out those drawers and storage rooms. A vintage painted shutter is outfitted with a series of hooks, creating an instant coat rack.  It could also be used in the bath to hang towels, or inside the garage for dog leashes and rain gear.

This coastal cottage window treatment is double the fun. A Union Jack flag acts as a curtain –hanging from a wooden oar turned curtain rod.… Continue Reading

Stairways to Heaven

sculptural interior staircases - antique Dutch Delft Tiles curved staircase - via Atticmag

A collection of sculptural interior staircases to create dramatic entrance halls.

We encounter stairs on a daily basis but this collection of sculptural interior staircases would stop most in their tracks. The first stairway is caressed by decorated antique delft tiles. Even the ornamental iron handrail is a beautiful blue with gold accents and a black handrail.  The dark stained treads are a nice contrast and add warmth to a charming entryway.

This curved staircase features balusters that extend below each step, attaching to the outer string.  This detail extends along the second floor as well — all lined up like soldiers. … Continue Reading

Heavenly Blue Kitchen

light blue kitchen cabinets - blue gray transitional kitchen by Angela Free Design via Atticmag

Light blue cabinets create a celestial atmosphere in a San Francisco kitchen.

Designer Angela Free created a transitional San Francisco pied-à-terre kitchen using soft colors, restraint in details and oversized accents.  The custom-color light blue kitchen cabinets seemingly float on quarter-sawn oak floors bleached to a light creamy finish.  Calacatta marble and seagrass limestone mosaic tiles highlight the backsplash whereas cream-color counters fade away.  A pair of large Hicks pendants by Thomas O’Brien feature bronze with antique brass accents and white glass shades.  While grand decorative fixtures (especially lanterns) are overused jewels, these have such an elegant theatrical appearance it’s easy to forgive this trendy detail.… Continue Reading

Alabama Stone Cottage Christmas

Christmas decor - Allison's Christmas tree decorations - Atticmag

A look at my personal collection of new and cherished Christmas decor.

Since building our lakeside cottage I’ve made a conscious effort to bring a touch of the outdoors inside when decorating. Christmastime is no exception.  By chance, I recently ran across a holiday collection in Lowe’s featuring oversized champagne- color pinecone tree ornaments with a mercury glass look, perfect for our home in the woods.

Mr. Shops loves the way the six-inch tall pinecones “light up,” almost from within, highlighting the softly glittered edges.  Drop-shaped ornaments in champagne, gold, chocolate and copper hang along side laser-cut wood snowflakes.  The new ornaments are all shatterproof, ideal with our small herd of pets and young grandchildren.… Continue Reading
