About Us
Atticmag is the online magazine of home design and décor and a community blog with a team of contributors who share a passion for home design, kitchens, bathrooms, interior decorating, antique furniture and rugs, collectibles, auctions, and shopping for high-quality home products.
Atticmag was founded by Editor and Publisher Jane Freiman, a New York based newspaper and magazine editor and cookbook author.
The initial concept for Atticmag took shape during Jane’s extensive house renovation when she took to the internet to find sources for basics such as flooring, fixtures, paint and hardware. Within a few months, she launched Kitchens We Love, her first online editorial venture – a look-book of kitchen inspiration photos which received more than 1.3 million views and became the core of Atticmag.
Once the house construction ended, Jane looked for ways to easily and inexpensively decorate her home. Having worked at Sotheby’s and in art galleries early on in her career, she was familiar with the antiques market and the internet let her easily search out older pieces to mix with the new. As the house progressed, her list of favorite interior design and collecting sources multiplied.
Along the way, Jane met eventual Atticmag team members who share her interests, including Deputy Editor Jane Tulanian. In collaboration, “the two Janes at Atticmag” as they are now known, realized how an online magazine in blog format could provide something new every day — home ideas, practical experience, design information, opinions, sources and inspiration photographs.
Although Jane F already had a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History, she enrolled at Parsons School of Design, in New York City, where she earned certification as an Interior Designer — not surprising since her parents had run a family-owned a drapery and upholstery factory in Los Angeles.
A graduate of UCLA, Jane has worked in the art world, the food world and in journalism during various phases of her career. Her early interests led her to the art business in New York and Paris. In France, she fell in love with food, eventually becoming an award-winning cookbook author and restaurant critic who holds a certificate in Culinary Arts from Luberon College in Avignon, France and was a longtime student of James Beard.
No surprise that Atticmag focuses seriously on kitchen design.
Writing about food and restaurants for New York magazine, New York Newsday, the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, and Harper’s Bazaar led to broader responsibilities in general journalism. As a Managing Editor at the New York Daily News, Jane F oversaw all the features and celebrity news in the nation’s largest daily tabloid. Now it has all come full circle at Atticmag.
