22 Black and White Stripe Ideas

Black and white stripe sectional sofa in the Alice + Olivia showroom – sukio.com via AtticmagHorizontal or vertical, these big bands cross the lines from frou-frou to minimalist in home décor.

Bold black and white stripes are on and off the wall and finding their way onto so many surfaces I couldn’t resist putting together a collection of ways to use this favorite motif. Whether they are called awning stripes, cabana stripes or pavilion stripes, my focus is on the big fat ones that always pack a visual punch. Used on a sofa [top] stripes can take a mid-century sectional from merely modern to OMG hip. Here are 21 more ways to use black and white striped décor at home.  (Click on “show thumbnails” to view photos individually)

Use vertical stripes on an accent wall (they make the ceiling look higher). Ferm Living Vertigo wallpaper, designed in Denmark and printed in Sweden is one good choice. Each roll is 33 feet long x 21 inches wide.

Use horizontal stripes in a whole room to create an optical backdrop for more traditional and colorful furniture like a vintage green settee.

Use horizontal stripes on the lower section of a wall (wainscot) as a modern form of paneling in a mini-mudroom hallway. The stripes can be separated from the upper wall by a cap of molding.

Use vertical stripes above painted wood paneling to highlight the walls for a photo gallery. A thick, black-painted crown molding helps frame the bars.

In a Danish kitchen, black and white stripes disguise the base cabinets and appliances and prevent elements of different eras from looking chopped up. The iconic clock is by Tord Boontje.

High gloss black and white stripes in a minimalist California bathroom by Chambers and Chambers eliminates the need for anything else on the walls.

Texas designer Kimberely Renner pieced together black and white Sunbrella fabric to update a pair of wing chairs in the living room of her Austin duplex.

Evenly lightly scaled side chairs look more important in black and white slipcovers when pulled up to Antonio Citterio’s Maxalto black oak table.

Marimekko striped fabric cushions on a rattan chair and matching ottoman give a fresh look to the back porch of Kristina Stark’s 19th century row house in Skillinge, Sweden. (Stark’s own Lotus Hurricane Lanterns from Design House, Stockholm are on the window sill).

The great American designer Dorothy Draper used black and white stripes on the original hallway floor of the Crystal Room at the Greenbrier Resort.

A dining room rug of pieced together Flor tiles tells the black and white story in a practical way.

Joss and Main’s Aimee upholstered awning-stripe headboard (no longer available) is a classic bedroom look that can be recreated with some foam padding and a staple gun. I love the earthy green accent throw (so often it's red or pink).

Two different cabana stripe patterns look downright cosy on a daybed in a pool house nook. Designer Alexandra Loew added curtains that unloop for privacy.

I love the fully upholstered Versailles double bed, from Treca Interiors Paris. Horizontal stripes on the skirt give the bed an unusually luxe look.

Leave it to Celerie Kemble to take tent stripes girly in an interior garden room with scalloped details as well as pink and green accents. So Palmy Beach.

An expansive tented awning creates an outdoor room on a city skyscraper terrace, together with a suite of matching furniture.

I could a pair of these all-weather wicker-weave patio chairs with aluminum frames. They would look great on my blue stone terrace plus withstand the dampness in our back yard. (Sadly, they are no longer available from Terrain but I always hope for a reprise).

Texas designer Kyle Knight chose this handsome black and white striped umbrella, with an all-weather teak pole, for the center of her dining table out by the pool. I so much prefer striped to solid outdoor umbrellas (Pottery barn has these.)

One of our favorite stencil sources used this photo to show off the charming wall but I fell instantly for the striped table base. This would be so easy to do with chalk (or any) paint!

At first I thought this clever striped cork board I found on the Brave New Home blog was a picture frame – either one would work, no?

I’m more of a focal point advocate than a fan of layering on the stripes but in the case of this charming table vase – or any other black and white striped accessory like this one from etsy seller Gone to Pot Texas – I’m all in.
