Cool Blue Decorating

vibrant blue Palm Beach pool house room by Aman and Carson InteriorsFrom baby to navy, blues remain a favorite color choice.

This freshly decorated outdoor pool house is saturated in color.  Rich blues are accompanied by bright white and silver for a soothing space.  An over-sized painting by artist Gary Simmons adds a graphic punch.  The horizontal lines of the sofa fabric and pillows are another bold move.

Provence blue den by Alexa HamptonThese rooms were all featured in the June issue of Architectural Digest, so forgive the centerfold crease in this scan.  The sofa and nail-studded hassock are upholstered in solids, while the chair and ottoman are a large geometric print.  Textured brown fabric on the second chair grounds the room.  Instead of sisal, a thin striped rug was selected – an excellent choice.

zebra-skin rug family room by designer David KleinburgLove the color, but feel too much of a good thing is anything but?  Touches (or should I say spots) of blue appear in artwork by Damien Hirst.  The vibrant canary yellow club chair cushion is piped in black and repeated in the pillow, color pulled from the layered zebra-skin rug.  Playfulness was interjected with the Tibetan goat pouf, a contrast to the traditional mantel.  Woven wall covering adds yet another texture to this fun family room.

Picture #1 is awful. The circles on the wall so dominate the room that everything else, including a fairly attractive sofa with tons of pillows, are shrunk to nothingness. I understand the use of art as a focal point but does it have to be so big?

Those look like fairly tall ceilings to me, which probably accounts for the scale.

That’s true, Jane. Plus it’s an outdoor space – a pool pavilion. Over-sized is fun, and something smaller/too small would be lost.
