Festive Felt Christmas Stockings

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.” Twas the Night Before Christmas
According to folklore, there was a widowed nobleman with three daughters. Having fallen upon hard times, they had no marriage dowries. One Christmas Eve, Saint Nicholas heard the villagers talking about the family and went to their cottage. The daughters had washed their clothes and hung their stockings over the fireplace to dry. Through the window, St. Nick saw the stockings and had an idea. He decided to throw three small bags of gold down the chimney so that each one landed in a stocking. The next morning, the daughters found the gold and the nobleman was able to see his daughters marry and live long happy lives.

Over the years, the tradition evolved into one most of us still honor today. On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus is left cookies and milk in exchange for his filling the stockings with- small toys and candy for those who have been nice, or a lump of coal for those who have been naughty.
Even if you’ve been bad, I bet these beauties will inspire Santa to leave you nothing but goodness! Handmade wool-felt stockings dressed with appliques and embroidery will add a warm touch to the mantel. For those who want a more modern twist to their holiday decor, selections include fun patterns of flowers and leaves and non-traditional colors.

Seasonal holly-green, berry-red and winter-white enrich these festive Christmas trimmings. The stocking in the center features a design dating back to the 18th century, carried out in a classic Hungarian hand-cut reverse applique technique. The hand-chisled edging is a charming touch. Decking the halls has never been so delightful!
