Wood-Plank Master Bath

In a beach house, it makes sense to rely on tropical wood planking that stands up well to water. In this Mr.-and-Mrs. master bath, the planks take on the added role of motif worked in three ways – like fencing to create a semi-open shower, like horizontal paneling on walls and then as slats on the shower floor and sink deck. There’s also a touch of Asian bathhouse aesthetic around the frosted window near the tub.

A series of aluminum trusses set up slender silvery beams to support the wood partitions. One cleverly doubles as a shower curtain rod. In the shower, twin stations are set again a white-tile wall and well illuminated with a recessed light in between.

Mosaic tile used all around the bathtub helps make the transition across the room to another while-tiled wall with double basin sinks set on top of a planked floating vanity that has handy towel storage shelf below. Overhead, sconces look rescued from an architectural office and mounted above the main mirror as easily adjustable task lights for the sinks and extra illumination for the magnifying mirror. Do they remind anyone else of albino grasshoppers?

It’s often difficult to photograph bathrooms, since space tends to be tight. This series helps show a lot about the way space can flow. I particularly like the photo, below, which gives a casual observer a feeling of just having stepped out of the shower.

Oh, I love this bathroom. Love the interplay of the wood with the cool white, grey or charcoal tile and the frosted metals in there. Really nicely balanced. It isn’t easy to pull off either without a very good sense of visual balance – in other words, I couldn’t come up with the right balance at all. But I love the wooden slat look carried through here.

Don’t care for it as a vanity counter, however. The vanity looks a bit like a 19th century steamer trunk or even an odd coffin, due to it.

Lighting (“albino grasshoppers” are artimede tolomeo, btw. Love ‘em and have a few of them myself), simple mirrors & fixtures are also favorites.

That’s a beautiful sculpted space, and soothing color palette. I really like all the wood, but my practical side has to wonder about maintenance, with all the slats and grooved surfaces. I would especially like to know how a slatted shower floor is maintained, about its design underneath, and how it holds up over the years.

Being designed by architects, I guess they’ve got all that worked out. Maybe you can just hose the whole place down :D

The wood counter top is beautiful. I’ve been looking at several different products and that’s amazing!
