How to Choose a Bedroom Rug
By Jane T ~ July 14th, 2009. Filed under: Passion for Rugs.
Subdued or flamboyant, thick and cushy or flat woven, a rug can be the crowing touch to your bedroom decor. Choosing the right size is easier than you think.
In the diagram above, we see one of the most common placements of rugs in the bedroom. Two runners placed on the floor alongside and one at the foot of the bed is one option. This works especially well with Oriental rugs. (We'll take a closer look at examples next time).
While there is no set rule to placing a rug underneath a bed, this diagram demonstrates how to position a carpet to 1) allow wood floor to show all around and 2) utilize a smaller sized carpet within the room by placing it partially underneath a bed.

Helpful tips:
Wool rugs are particularly susceptible to moths when placed beneath a bed (or any piece of furniture) as moths do their damage in dark undisturbed places. Inspecting every few months and regular vacuuming will keep you ahead of them. Invest in a good pad. The bedroom is no place to skimp on making sure the edges of your rug(s) are secure from sliding on hardwood floors. Consider traffic patterns - especially those at night when you are apt to get up in the dark - watch for flat woven rugs that may have flimsy or curling edges that can cause you to trip.

Another great rug how-to, Jane. I had trouble in our bedroom deciding between going under the bed or not. Went with “or not” but went under in one of our guest rooms. Another guest rooms does not have a rug at all. Do you think every room should have a rug (rather than a bare floor)….or is that a loaded question to be asking a rug expert? lol

Great question Allison. I think it depends on the room don’t you? I know a lot of my customers like to at least have something by the bed for cold winter nights.
Your question brought to mind Tracy’s comment in the How to Choose a DR rug post. She was speaking about historic homes and how sometimes it’s difficult to find the correct sized rug to fit under a DR table. In that case I would go without (and I think you would too) rather than have an ill-fitting rug.

The rooms above look fantastic and show how inspiration for bedroom design can be gained from a simple item such as a rug.
