Rustic takes a bold turn in this kitchen where cherry-red and white tile lines a large chimney niche and frames a big Wolf range with signature red knobs. In the niche, an inky paint color makes lower pots and pan shelves adjacent to the range take on a subordinate role. Counters are topped with soapstone.
While blue-and-white or yellow-and-blue are most often associated with the French country scheme at play here, Phoenix designer Dana Lyon skillfully worked the red with reddish browns in natural brick floor pavers (from chicagobrick.net). The antiqued, provincial style woodwork color of the doors and island blends in perfectly.
Full length curtains are unusual in kitchens. Here, Ralph Lauren’s Brass Lantern red ticking stripe fabric runs in two directions — lengthwise on the pleats and horizontally on the edges. Running the pattern crosswise creates an interesting sense of movement across the large windows.
In a play on French bistro style, the elaborately carved island boasts a galvanized metal top that suggests a zinc bar. The prep-sink faucet in the island is by Kohler. Dunn and Edwards Swiss Coffee paint provides the backdrop for a kitchen in the desert with a decidedly European flavor.
